How Your Belief System Was Built — And Why It Still Runs Your Life Today

(…even when you’re no longer aware of it)

We like to think we make our choices logically, but most of what we think, feel and do is driven by the subconscious mind — the part of your mind that works automatically, storing your memories, emotions, habits, and beliefs.

So where do our beliefs come from?

Most of your core beliefs were formed between 0–7 years old, when your brain was in a highly absorbent state (like a sponge).
At that age, you weren’t analysing the world — you were absorbing it, literally programming what you believed to be
true, safe, normal and possible.

You didn’t choose these beliefs.
You inherited them from:

  • Family
  • School & teachers
  • Friends & peer groups
  • Culture & religion
  • Media
  • Emotional experiences (good or bad)

The subconscious stores experiences, not logic

It learns through repetition and emotion — not facts.

Example:
If you cried as a child and someone gave you chocolate to make you feel better, your subconscious stored:

“I feel sad → chocolate makes me feel safe and loved.”

Fast forward 20 years… you’re stressed, tired, heartbroken, overwhelmed — and you suddenly crave chocolate.
It has nothing to do with hunger.
It’s your subconscious trying to comfort you the way it learned years ago.

This is how emotional eating, people-pleasing, perfectionism, burnout, fear of failure, money blocks, and self-doubt are formed — all from old subconscious associations.

The subconscious isn’t trying to sabotage you.

It’s trying to protect you, based on old data.

It doesn’t care if the habit is healthy, helpful or logical —it only cares that it worked once, a long time ago.

So it repeats the pattern.

The good news?

What was learned can be unlearned.
With the right tools (like
hypnotherapy & NLP), you can update the subconscious, remove outdated beliefs and replace them with new ones that match the life you want now.

Because you are not your past programming.
You’re just still running it.

And once you change the belief, the behaviour changes naturally.
